Hey Buzz crew,

You discussed on episode 1060 regarding Google checkout getting involved with paying for newspaper articles on the web. Tom discussed making it as simple as the Apps store, and figuring .02 would be ok, and not seeing how it could possibly added up without our knowing.
Another solution to this problem could possibly be paying for points, just like XBOX does to pay for downloadable content. How many Rockband songs have you added, without even giving thought to how much money you have actually spent on the game.
This would keep you logged in, and to read the rest of this story it would require ‘x’ points, and if you don’t have the points available, your redirected to a site to add points.

Just a thought, the show is AWESOME! Thank

Hey Buzz crew,

As I was installing the new version of iTunes today (version 9.0), I saw something interesting. I had to accept a new EULA (which usually happens), but this time, they had a summary of the important changes over the actual legalese. This appears to be an easy way to get around the fight between a EULA that the lawyers want and one that we can understand. The only issue: you have to trust the company (in this case, Apple), that they are doing a fair job summarizing the changes. :-)

Love the show!

hey buzzards!

you mentioned how 3D TV is being used to prevent piracy and how it
will eventually circumvented.

yes, that’s true… but it would still essentially eliminate the
distribution of cam and telesync copies of films still in theaters as
cammers wont be able to record films in this fashion. you wouldnt even
be able to film a 3D image with a 3D camera for obvious reasons
(unless it were some kind of crosseyed lens setup to somehow pinch the
alternating perspectives into a single image, a la “magic eye”
stereoscopic images. just kidding).

pirates wouldnt be able to release anything until a screener is able
to be ripped at the very least, therefore putting more reluctant
viewers into the theaters if they just cant wait for it.

just another point of view.

(obligatory) love the show!

Hi Buzz Crew,

You are making so much fun of the idea of Windows 7 installation parties. Well actually... this kind of parties are VERY popular and called: install fest (just type into Google). What you will see is a LOT of Linux install fest parties :) Microsoft communities also organize install fests. Usually they take place in some bar/pub where you sit with a bunch of geek friends and install a new release of some product. And after that you sum up the finished installations, unfinished once, also there are some disasters like a burned laptop etc. ;)
So to finish this email - the idea is not new, not only MS does it but a lot of user communities :)

Google front page patent – Please do not call this a patent, I know you all love to poke fun at us but be a bit fair. Design patents are more like a trademark then a standard patent. Design patents only protect the appearance and not any of the tech behind it, they are used for anything from packaging to buildings. The design patent only provide very limited coverage as they only protect against near exact copies. Still love the show.

Commodore 64 iPhone emulator approved, yanked
September 8, 2009 at 7:10 pm

(Credit: Manomio)

The Commodore 64 emulator application for iPhone, previously rejected by Apple, was approved for availability in the App Store over the weekend, only to get pulled days later.

Apple blocked the sale of the iPhone app, dubbed C64, from the store on Tuesday without explaining why, according to developer Manomio. And while Apple was not immediately available for comment regarding the C64 app, which is designed to enable users to play classic Commodore 64 games and run applications, Manomio says it believes that the yanking is related to an available work-around that enables users to activate the Commodore BASIC interpreter, a feature behind the application's initial App Store rejection.

As outlined in the iPhone Blog on Sunday, the BASIC interpreter could be accessed via the C64 app by enabling "always show full keyboard," starting a game, paging over to the Extra keyboard, then tapping Reset.

"Unfortunately, with all the submitting and changing we made for Apple, we inadvertently re-enabled the Reset button," Manomio CTO Stuart Carnie said. "And since all the games have a custom control panel, we completely missed the keyboard issue. I'm not sure how we can address this...It was actually quite a surprise that the release happened on Saturday."

Leaving an opening for that Reset work-around was a "simple mistake" on Manomio's part--it "wasn't intended to be an Easter egg," as some media outlets are touting it, said Carnie, who added that the back door to the BASIC interpreter has been blocked in a subsequent update to the C64 app that the company has submitted for review. In the meantime, iPhone users who purchased the C64 app before it was pulled can continue to experience retro gaming and experiment with the BASIC interpreter.

Anything capable of allowing the entry of programming code and generation of an offshoot app could be a security risk to the iPhone and its users. Apple is strongly opposing such capabilities in iPhone applications, but if a BASIC interpreter is implemented properly in a sandbox environment, there should be nothing to worry about, according to Manomio.

Although the BASIC interpreter enabled via the work-around, according to Manomio, indeed operates in a sandbox environment that completely separates the two operating systems, the developer has yet to convince Apple that it is incapable of harming the iPhone's operating system. If the developer continues to meet opposition on that point, it will be forced to develop a new release that effectively removes access to BASIC permanently.

(Credit: Wikimedia Commons)

Commodore International released the Commodore 64 in 1982. Originally priced at $595, sales eventually totaled 30 million units, making it the best-selling single personal computer model of all time. The 8-bit home computer featured advanced video and audio hardware, as well as a whopping 64K of RAM and a zippy (for its time) 1.02MHz central processing unit.

Perhaps proving the Commodore 64's lasting popularity, Manomio sold more than 7,000 copies of the $4.99 app between its release on Saturday and its pull-down on Tuesday, meriting temporary placement in the App Store's Top 50 category for paid apps in 28 countries, according to Carnie. C64 had been bundled with five licensed titles: La Mans, Dragons Den, Arctic Shipwreck, Jack Attack, and Jupiter Lander.

Are you are former Commodore 64 user who is interested in reliving the past by coding in Commodore BASIC, spending long hours typing a program in from your favorite magazine, or running a favorite retro game? Let us know in the comments.

Smile! Flickr has an official iPhone app
September 8, 2009 at 11:24 am

The official Flickr app for iPhone and iPod Touch offers search, browse, and upload features.

Better late than never? Following in the footsteps of countless third-party efforts, Flickr has finally made its official debut in the App Store.

The app hits the ground running--make that scrolling--with a slick Ken Burns-style slideshow of hand-picked images from the site.

An initial tap of the Recent, You, or Contacts button along the bottom leads you through a one-time authorization process (which requires a visit to Safari), after which you gain access to the respective user-account features on Flickr.

You can also search for photos and videos, of course, and do all the usual stuff with whatever you find: add to favorites, share via e-mail, leave a comment, etc.

Of course, the main appeal here is uploading: You can snap and upload a photo on the fly or choose an existing snapshot from your library. The app lets you assign the photo to a set, add tags (including a geotag from your current location), and choose a privacy level.

In short, the official Flickr app does just about everything you'd want it to (except batch uploads, that is), and with simplicity and style. It's free, of course, and it works with both free and Pro accounts.

So this begs the question: is there an existing third-party app that "does Flickr" better than Flickr's own app? Share your thoughts in the comments.
